Gary Thomas McLaren, 73, of Toledo’s Point Place community, passed away at home on Sunday, August 8, 2021. He was born on November 25, 1947 in Johnstown, PA to John and Mary Frances (Barndt) McLaren. Gary was a graduate of Woodward High School and attended the University of Toledo. He served in the US Air Force for 22 ½ years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He was then employed as letter carrier for the US Postal Service for 10 years, retiring in 2005. Gary was a member of Harbor Light Masonic Lodge 746, the Toledo Port Lawrence Chapter 161 of the Royal Arch Masons, Toledo Council 33,
Eu Tah Commandery 66, the KYCH Ohio Priory 18, the Scottish Rite Masons, and the Zenobia Shrine Masons. He was also a member of VFW Point Place Post 3265. A member of the NRA, Gary enjoyed rifle, crossbow, shotgun, and muzzle hunting. He also enjoyed camping and was a talented leathercrafter.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Jodi McLaren and Kari Maassel; grandchildren, Josh Wilson, Kristina Hussell, Courtney (Brian) Gehlsen, Alicia Maassel, and David Maassel; great grandchildren, Adrian and Destiny Martinez; sister, Mary Frances “Sue” (Steve) Karalfa; and brother, John (Rose) McLaren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dennis McLaren.
Visitation will be Friday, August 13 from 2-8 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. where members of Harbor Light Lodge 746 will lead a Masonic Lodge Service at 7 p.m. Inurnment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI.
